Portarlington Golf Club has launched a campaign for new members, and are especially keen to welcome men, women, juniors and students, and families. The Golf Club is one of the oldest in the country, and celebrated its 100th anniversary 2 years ago. Club Captain Frank Smith is inviting anyone interested in joining the Club to come to an Open Night on Thursday 11th March. Frank is keen to explain to prospective members the many reasons why they should join:

  • The 18 hole course is fully owned by the members, with newly acquired land awaiting development.
  • The Course is now in Golf Digest’s Top 100 courses in Ireland
  • Recent reviews rated the Course in the Top 10 “Value for Money” courses in Ireland.
  • A recent review of all courses in Ireland also rated Portarlington’s 14th hole as the best 14th in Ireland, ahead of Doonbeg’s Greg Norman designed 14th.
  • The Club especially welcomes families, and has a special Family Membership category at a significant discount.
  • Courtfield’s Restaurant in the Clubhouse has recently had a great review from Paolo Tullio.
  • The Club has recently reduced its Joining Fee by half to €1,000.

The Men’s Club is very active and welcomes golfers at all levels of the game – beginner and experienced. Lady Captain Stephanie Gorman also points out that the Ladies’ section has been organising lessons for beginners to encourage ladies to take up golf, and this innovation is continuing this year.

The Junior section has yielded several very successful young golfers, with Daniel Murphy leading the pack. Daniel won the Leinster and Ulster Boys Championships in 2009, along with the Leinster and Irish Order of Merit for 2009, a remarkable achievement. 12 year old Maedhbh Doyle has also had notable achievements during 2009, including having the best nett score in the Midland Girls under 18 competition in June. The Club has adopted the Junior Charter of the GUI, meaning that the Club places the welfare of young golfers very high on its list of priorities.

Anyone interested in joining Portarlington Golf Club should come to the Clubhouse in Garryhinch at 8pm on Thursday 11th March. Junior golfers should be represented by a parent or guardian. Committee members and Club members will be available on the night to answer any queries. A draw will be held on the night for a free Joining Fee worth €1,000.
