Congratulations to Nenagh Golf Club on winning the 2009 Michael Moore Cup.
Well done to the Leinster Fourball team and management who reached the final of the competition and played Wicklow GC for the title. After a 3/2 home result, the team travelled to Wicklow and battled to another nail biting 3/2 match, resulting in the need for a playoff to separate the teams. After the first sudden death hole the teams were still tied and unfortunately the Portarlington pair were beaten on the second playoff hole and the victory went to Wicklow.
Well done to the Castle Barna team who recently defeated Mullingar in the semi finals and now play Mount Leinster in the decider this coming Sunday.
As the holders of the prestigious Heritage Shield, Portarlington had high hopes for the strong team of Ciaran Finnane & Ger Ward together with Sean O'Donoghue & Gareth Davies. The team did not disappoint as they were in tied first place with the hosts at the end of play. However the Heritage team had the better fourball card with 40pts which was enough for them to reclaim the Shield.

Hard luck to John Connolly and John McNally who represented Portarlington in the Laois final of the NCBI Holmpatrick Cup which was won by a strong pairing from the Heritage. Best of luck to the Heritage team in the upcoming Regional Final.

Well done to Daniel Murphy, fresh from his 23 hole semi final victory and 3&2 victory in the final of the Ulster Boys Championships, who last week claimed 3&1/2 valuable points for the Leinster Boys Interprovincial team. Both the Boys and Youth Inter-pros were held in Headfort GC between 21st and 23rd July, with Daniels Leinster Boys Team claiming their Championship.

Last Saturday saw the inaugural outing of The Centenary Challenge Shield which involved three of the four clubs who celebrated their centenary year in 2008. Delganey GC from Wicklow and Monkstown GC from Cork travelled to Garryhinch to take on Portarlington. The format involved 12 pairs from each club playing Scotch Foursomes stableford with ten scores to count for each club. In a tight contest played in great spirits, Portartington were delighted to be the first name on the impressive looking shield. The golf was followed by an enjoyable evening of songs and storytelling with our visitors going home impressed with both our course and hospitality and looking forward to next year already.

Very well done to Portarlington member Daniel Murphy who added the 2009 Ulster Boys Championship to his recent Leinster Boys crown. Daniel and fellow member Sean O'Donoghue were part of the 171 player field that started play on the shores of Belfast Lough at Holywood Golf Club last Tuesday the 14th July. Both boys finished in the top 64 on Tuesday and thus qualified for the matchplay rounds. Sean came up against a tough opponent on Wednesday morning and didn't make it through to the afternoon matches. Daniel, bringing his fine form into the Championship, qualified in 5th position for the matchplay rounds and had a comfortable match on Wednesday morning before a much closer encounter in the afternoon. Daniel progress through the third round and quarter finals on Thursday before lifting the title on Friday afternoon.
Well done also to the Leinster Fourball team who defeated Castlecomer last Saturday and are now through to the semi final stage of the competition. More good news on the Team front as our Tudenham Cup team progress to the quarter final stage of the Cup at the expense of Woodlands last Thursday. Well done to all involved.

Well done to Daniel Murphy who won the Leinster Boys Championship last week at Laytown and Bettystown Golf Club. Daniel held the lowest handicap of the entire field and went on to win the championship from wire to wire. Daniel was tied on 286 strokes with Dungannon player Dwayne Mallon, however, Daniel took only 12 strokes over the three hole play-off, which was two clear of his opponent. Daniel follows in the footsteps of top tour players players including Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington in lifting the prestigious Cup. After finishing second at the Munster Boys, and winning the Leinster boys, Daniel and fellow club member Sean O'Donoghue go into this weeks Ulster Boys Amateur Open Championship 14th-17th July at Holywood Golf Club full of confidence. Best of luck to Daniel Murphy of Portarlington Golf Club who has been selected to compete in the Irish Boys vs. Wales match in Rosslare Golf Club from 7th-8th April. Best wishes also to Kevin Markham who launches his book "Hooked: An Amateur's Guide to the Golf Courses of Ireland" on the 22nd April in Greystones Golf Club. Kevin spend 18 months playing over 300 courses around the country and has complied a list of the best 18 holes from his travels. The 14th hole in Portarlington Golf Club has made it into the book as the best 14th hole in the country. Portarlington also has the distinction of being named in the top ten "Value for Money" courses in the book. The book is available in Eason's and from Collins Press and I'm sure it will make a great read for every golf fan.
